How to do Citations for a Paper
This page is for the use of the students. This will help remind you of how to cite sources within the papers you will be writing in class. There will just be quick rules for citations, and you are always welcome (and encouraged) to use Citation Machine. We will be using MLA citations in this class.
Citing a Book
You will be listing the citations on a bibliography page. For citing a book, it should look like this:
Austen, Jane. Pride and Prejudice. London; New York: Penguin Publishing Company, 1996.
335. Print.
You list the author, with the last name followed by the first name. Then the book title goes in italics. It is followed by the cities it was published in and the publishing company and the year it was published. The page total and the medium you found it in (print, ebook, ect.) is last. If you use Citation Machine or just follow this example you should be fine. Let me know if you have questions.
Citing a Web Page
Citing a website should look like this:
"Pride and Prejudice." Wikipedia. Wikimedia Foundation, Inc, 13 March 2012. Web. 14 Mar 2012.
You would have the author, last name listed first, before the title of the page, but only if you can find it. You need to list the things you can find. Next comes the title of the webpage you are citing, followed by the website and the publishing company behind the website. Then you list the date it was last modified, followed by the date you were on the cite. Finally, the URL is put in.
Of course, none of you will be using Wikipedia as a source, right? :)
Those are the two main types of citing that we will be using. You will probably also use encyclopedia at some point and we will go over how to cite those in class. Even though I highly encourage you all to use Citation Machine, knowing how to do this on your own is very helpful. Keep in mind that I might have a quiz over this at some point, so be ready!
