Short Story Unit
For our short story unit, we are going to be looking at a variety of short stories from a variety of time periods. We will be focusing on different topics when it comes to each story, and the unit will end with the students writing their own short story, combining all of the elements we had looked at over the unit.
**Come to class with ideas ready for your short story and we will begin brainstorming our ideas.
Short Stories
The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman
A Rose for Emily by William Faulkner
Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin
The Lottery by Shirley Jackson
Hills Like White Elephants by Ernest Hemingway
Tandolfo the Great by Richard Bausch
Gryphon by Charles Baxter
Happy Endings by Margaret Atwood
Topics to be discussed
Point of View (Yellow Wallpaper and A Rose for Emily)
Irony (Story of an Hour, The Lottery)
Dialogue (Hills like White Elephants)
Direct and Indirect Characterization (Tandolfo the Great, Gryphon)
Story vs. Plot (Happy Endings)
Final Project
Keeping in mind the elements of literature discussed in class, the students will write their own short story. It must be at least 1,000 words and written in MLA format. It will be graded for the use of the elements and techniques we talked about in class. The story must be original and not copied from another source or student. It will be worth 100 points.
